The Maiden's Tower |
|
On
the south edge of the Bosphorus where it meets the Marmara Sea,
there stands an attractive tower. Acting as a beacon to ships
that pass through the Bosphorus at night, for centuries the
little tower in the water has also been a source of inspiration
for the poets of the city. Myths about the tower have increased
its mystery and attraction and made it a popular tourist
destination.
Having become a symbol of istanbul, this historical structure
was first the site of a tomb during the Greek period of the city,
and then it was used as a customs house together with the
building added during the Byzantine period. The Ottomans used it
as a defense fortress, sometimes as an island of exile and
quarantine, and often as a place for entertaining shows. The
tower is known for its powerful images that recall isolated
people, incurable diseases and hopeless loves.

The
earliest myth attached to the Maiden Tower's is a love story told by
Ovid. The tower was the site of the forbidden love of Hero, a virgin
in the Aphrodite temple, and a young man named Leandros, who lost
his way trying to reach the tower on a storm night, was overcome by
the waves and drowned in sorrow. Seeing her lover succumb to the
waves, Hero threw herself from the tower into the Bosphorus.
The most popular myth tells about a king who, fearing a prophecy
that his beloved daughter would be bitten by a snake on her 18th
birthday and die, decides to guard her safety by keeping her
confined in this tower in the sea. |

Despite his efforts, destiny rules after a basket
of fresh grapes is sent to the tower and a snake hidden at the
bottom of the
basket delivers the fatal bite. Closed to the public for
centuries,Maiden's Tower went through a comprehensive restoration
and recently opened as a restaurant, cafeteria and bar. With its 360-degree
views of istanbul and the Bosphorus, Maiden Tower is a
popular visitation spot. It is open daily, and in the evenings, the
restaurants on the ground floor offer delicious entrees from world
cuisine.
There are boat services to the tower from Uskudar-Salacak and
Ortakoy during the day. At night, boat services from Uskudar Salacak
and Kabatas continue until late. |
