The
Feshane was a factory established to produce clothing and fez
for he Ottoman army by the imperial decree of Sultan Abdulmecid
in year 1835. This was Ottoman Turkey's first textile
manufacturing plant and one of the first examples anywhere in
the world of a steel construction. The building was assembled
from component brought from Belgium in the year 1851. The
factory was renovated in the year 1866 to become the most up-to-date
weaving mill of its time. The fabrics woven at the Feshane were
rewarded by numerous gold medals at the 3rd Paris Exposition
held in 1855, at the Ottoman Exhibition held in istanbul in 1863
and at the 1893 Chicago Exhibition. The Factory was closed down
in 1939 and used as a warehouse for many years. In 1986 the
large weaving hall with an area of 8000 sqm. was authentically
restored. Today the Feshane is operated by Beltur, the
Metropolitan İstanbul Education Tourism and Health Investments
Operation and Trade Corporation. The Feshane is today available
for fairs, conferences and exhibitions. The Feshane includes
open-air parking for 1200 vehicles, the Feshane Golden Horn
Landing Stage and Feshane World Children's Entertainment Park.
